On the agenda: <strong>pyrogasification<\/strong>, a long-standing technology that is now emerging as a complementary way to produce <strong>sustainable gas<\/strong> from non-recyclable waste. <\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\">A round table on the French potential for decarbonization by 2050<\/h2>\n<p>Jean-Paul Cal\u00e8s participated in the round table \"The French potential for decarbonization by 2050,\" alongside:<\/p>\n<ul dir=\"ltr\">\n<li>Madeleine Lafon, General Delegate of France Gaz;<\/li>\n<li>Laurence Poirier-Dietz, CEO of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grdf.fr\/\">GRDF<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li>Jean-Luc Fugit, Member of Parliament for the 11th constituency of Rh\u00f4ne;<\/li>\n<li>Olivier Dauger, Co-president of <a href=\"https:\/\/gazrenouvelables.fr\/\">France Gaz Renouvelables<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Seeing public decision-makers, elected officials, and <strong>renewable gas<\/strong> stakeholders gathered in the same room is a reassuring signal: the sector is moving forward, driven by a broad and mobilized ecosystem.<\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\">A new generation of green gases is emerging<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Three technological paths are emerging to produce <strong>green gas<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/novea.green\/en\/our-technology\/\">pyrogasification<\/a>, anaerobic digestion, and hydrothermal gasification. They are complementary and all committed to the same trajectory of regional <strong>decarbonization<\/strong> and <strong>energy transition<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Thank you to FranceGaz for giving a voice to an industrial player and field actor in this transformation.<\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\">Pyrogasification: a long-standing technology, a new opportunity<\/h2>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\">From town gas to gasifiers: a century and a half of history<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Jean-Paul Cal\u00e8s pointed out: pyrogasification is not <a href=\"https:\/\/novea.green\/en\/about-us\/\" title=\"History of pyrogasification\">a new technology<\/a>. It dates back to the gas plants built around Paris in the 19th century to light and then heat the city. It then saw the use of gasifiers, revived during oil shortages, and again during the 1973 crisis, which allowed for the launch of industrial pyrogasification.  <\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\">A process revived by France 2030<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The France 2030 plan has allowed this process to be brought back to the forefront. Selected by <a href=\"https:\/\/infos.ademe.fr\/magazine-avril-2025\/france-2030-un-investissement-pour-la-france-de-demain\/\">ADEME<\/a>, NOV\u00c9A built an industrial unit using its own funds to produce syngas with its patented process. <\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\">How does NOV\u00c9A's staged pyrogasification work?<\/h2>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\">Two reactors for a tar-free syngas<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The process is based on two steps:<\/p>\n<ol dir=\"ltr\">\n<li><strong>Pyrolysis<\/strong>: non-fermentable waste is heated. It produces a pyrolysis gas, which powers the process, and a carbon-rich residue. <\/li>\n<li><strong>Gasification<\/strong>: this residue is gasified to obtain a tar-free syngas.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\">Inputs without conflict of use with anaerobic digestion<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Pyrogasification valorizes non-fermentable waste: solid recovered fuel (SRF), waste wood, vine shoots... There is therefore no conflict of use with the biomass used in anaerobic digestion. The two sectors complement each other. <\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\">From syngas to injectable biomethane<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Syngas can be transformed into different molecules. Thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/innovation.grdf.fr\/partner\/show\/124\">the call for projects won with GRDF<\/a>, NOV\u00c9A is working on injecting <strong>biomethane<\/strong> into the grid. To do this, it has partnered with Energo (Hauts-de-France), which transforms syngas into CH\u2084 via vacuum plasma with a catalyst.  <\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\">Waste valorization: a circular economy challenge<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Jean-Paul Cal\u00e8s emphasized: we cannot continue to bury waste indefinitely, nor to export it. The <strong>valorization of waste<\/strong> into energy responds to this paradigm shift. <\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\">A regional and industrial model<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The targeted units process approximately 50,000 tons of waste per year, transported by trucks within the region: it is a local <strong>circular economy<\/strong>. The process also uses simple equipment (scrap metal, refractories, regulation), without rare earths or power electronics: an asset for the reindustrialization of France. <\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\">Scaling up: stability and education<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">To deploy these industrial units, which require significant CAPEX, Jean-Paul Cal\u00e8s called for:<\/p>\n<ul dir=\"ltr\">\n<li><strong>stability and visibility<\/strong>: investors are cautious in the face of an unstable framework, hence the importance of BPCs (biomethane production contracts);<\/li>\n<li><strong>education<\/strong>: explaining with figures, starting from the basics for both public authorities and the general public;<\/li>\n<li><strong>increased listening to engineers<\/strong> by political decision-makers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\">An industrial installation already in real-world conditions<\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Our pilot site in Le Barp, Gironde, has been operating under real operating conditions since 2025.
